US Open Day 2: Yawn

29 Aug

So there were no exciting upsets on Day 2 of the US Open. There was also not much excitement at all. Players defeated opponents quickly and efficiently. Defending champion Novak Djokovic killed his opponent Italian Paolo Lorenzi 6-1, 6-0, 6-1. The match lasted all of 73 minutes and was pretty much an ass whooping.

Then Serena Williams defeated fellow American Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-1. At this point it kind of seems like Serena could win in her sleep. Her sister Venus Williams on the other hand has been struggling. Venus has been trying to push past her autoimmune disease but fell short in the past. Venus did manage to defeat fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3, 6-1.

So no close matches yet. Maybe there will be some excitement on Day 3 with Maria Sharapova and Andy Murray.

US Open Favorites Still In

28 Aug

Despite having some stuff issues which in the media automatically means pregnancy, Maria Sharapova, cruised through the opening round of the US Open. Sharapova who is ranked third defeated Melinda Czink of Hungary, 6-2, 6-2 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. It seems like Sharapova is rebounded well after being crushed by Serena Williams at the Olympic where she lost 6-0, 6-1. Sharapova claims part of the reason she struggled against Williams was her weird stomach pains.

The other tennis champs are cruising on as well. Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray defeated Alex Bogomolov Jr., of Russsia, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 on Monday. Roger Federer defeated Donald Young, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

US Open favorite Serena Williams will play Tuesday against Coco Vandeweghe. Another US Open favorite Novak Djokovic, who has taken out Federer twice in the open, will play against Paolo Lorenzi Tuesday as well. Venus Williams will also take the court on Tuesday against fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Venus has been struggling so we will definitely have to see how far she makes it.

Serena Wins Wimbledon

7 Jul

Serena Williams just won her 5th Wimbledon title on Saturday. She took out first-time finalist Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 5-7. 6-2. That poor Polish girl didn’t stand a chance against Williams’ aces. She had 102 aces in the tournament and 4 in one game. That’s amazing considered she just recovered from foot surgery. This is Williams’ 14th major title.

The fun is not over for Williams who will be competing with Venus later today in the doubles final. We will be watching.

Venus Out, Sharapova Moving On

25 Jun

The once all-powerful Venus Williams has fallen in the first round of of Wimbeldon on Monday. Williams(now 32 years old) has been struggling with autoimmune disease the has been considerably slowing her down. She was defeated by 79th-ranked Elena Vesnina of Russia with 6-1, 6-3.  It’s been 6 1/2 years since Williams has lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament. Williams is planning to be at the Olympics but it’s not looking promising.

Meanwhile Maria Sharapova just keeps on cruising through matches. She beat Aussie Anastasia Rodionova 6-2, 6-3. Sharapova is trying to win both the French Open and Wimbeldon in the same year. The last woman to do that was Serena Williams 10-years ago. It is looking likely it will happen.

Another Williams Bites the (Clay) Dust

30 May

Venus Williams fell to third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska in the second round of the French Open Wednesday.  This was not as surprising as Serena’s exit in the first round, but it is rare not to see either Williams sister enter the second week of play when neither are injured.

Venus was competing in her first major tournament since she announced last August she had Sjogren’s syndrome, which causes joint pain and exaustion.

I can only hope this is not a sign of things to come in women’s tennis. V and S are some of the older players on tour, but I still consider them the best.  When they are at the top of their game, hardly anybody can match the power of their serves and ground strokes.  And let’s face it, clay is not the best surface for American players!

Horrible styles in women’s tennis

I thought tennis was a classy sport? What has happened?

Oh it runs backwards!

OIRB was never meant to be a fashion critic blog. But watching the French Tennis Open this weekend, I just so happened to catch a glimpse of a certain Bethanie Mattek Sands’ match against something something Lisicki. And it was mesmerizing.

Bethanie is American, ranked 170 in the WTA. However, in our horrible tennis style ranking, she is an obvious number 1. Or is she? Here is our top 5 horrible tennis styles.

5. Serena Williams

The motorcycle / hells angels from outer-space  look, by Serena Williams. Good enough to make number 5.

I especially like the leather shin guards.

4. Maria Sharapova

The mermaid-look was a long shot, even for Maria.

Obviosuly, Nike recently hired the people who did Jenifer Lopez’s provocative Versace rainforest dress at the oscars back in 2000.

The question left unanswered here is: how can you be so pretty and look so bad?

3. King Joffrey
