Umm Thanks I’m Good

29 Aug

Team USA gymnast Aly Raisman received an interesting proposal while signing autographs at an L.A. Office Depot. A fan asked for her hand in marriage using a ring pop. The man even got on one knee. Raisman of course said no but did take the ring pop. She also gave the fan a picture.  Can’t blame the guy for trying. It will definitely make for a good story later.

If this happens to Raisman at age 18 I can only imagine what happens to Ryan Lochte. He’s of marrying age too.

USA Still Golden

13 Aug

The Olympics have come to an end. And although I will not miss my daily does of water polo and Subways constant avocado promotions, I am sad to seem them go. The Olympics remind us of how truly amazing the human body is and what we can overcome to achieve. And what better way to pump up our egos than celebrating the fact that the US took home more gold medals than any other country. So let’s take a moment and enjoy our gold before we are forced to hand it over to China.

  1. United States, 104 (46 gold, 29 silver, 29 bronze)
  2. China, 87 (38, 27, 22)
  3. Russia, 82 (24, 25, 33)
  4. Great Britain, 65 (29, 17, 19)
  5. Germany, 44 (11, 19, 14)

Fastest Man Bolt Will Make $20 million

6 Aug

It is really tough being an Olympic athlete of sports that people only care about every four years. Whenever I see an athlete crying because they came in second or didn’t qualify, I think they just lost a lot of money. I mean don’t get me wrong I am sure part of their tears comes from pride but I think for the most part it is the pressure to earn big bucks. These athletes only get one chance every four years to earn your attention. And losing by fractions of a second can cost them millions.

Take for example the world’s fastest man, Usain Bolt. He has secured his place in history along side Carl Lewis as an Olympian who has consecutively won the 100-meter race. Not only that but he has likely increased his annual earning to around $20 million. Bolt and his signature “lightning bolt” pose will be racking in the dough from sponsors like Puma and Visa. The Olympics are the kind of international exposure that smaller sports companies like Puma dream of. And with NBC(despite its lack of “live” coverage) pulling in top numbers from US audiences, Bolt can be assured to get the exposure he needs.

So basically Olympics competitions have become the ultimate in reality television with everyone vying for their time in the sun. I mean just looks at fellow Jamaican runner Yohan Blake who had previously beaten Bolt in trails. While the other athletes were claim and collected at the block, he was dancing. Why? Because Blake knows if you can’t beat Bolt you can at least still a little of his fame.

White Men Can Run

4 Aug

I have to admit when the 10,000(6 miles for us Americans) meters race started I was doubtful that USA’s Galen Rupp had a chance in hell. In a reverse racist move on my part, I was thinking really USA we are running a white dude. But shockingly Rupp came in second behind his British training partner Mo Farah. It was beautiful moment to watch Farah win for Great Britain. Farah ran the 25 lap race in 27 minutes and 30.42 seconds. To give you some perspective it would take me about an hour to run 6 miles.

For the US Rupp he brought home the first medal in the race since 1964 when Billy Mills won gold. If only NBC had interviewed him right after instead of cutting away to beach volleyball. Finishing with the bronze was Tariku Bekele of Ethiopia.

So there you have it, I should have never doubted Rupp.

Update: Phelps Get 19th Medal

31 Jul

Okay so just as I was writing about Michael Phelps getting his 18th medal and tying the record. Now he has the most medals in Olympic history with 19 medals.  The US took home the gold medal in the 4×200 relay. Phelps was the anchor of the team. The team included Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer, Ricky Berens, and Phelps. They won with a time of 6 minutes, 59.70 seconds. Behind them was France with 7:02.77 and China in third with 7:06:30.  That means Lochte now has two gold medals!!!! And we finally beat France.

Hot Olympian of the Day: Daryl Homer

30 Jun

You may not think fencing is really cool but keep in mind there would be no light saber fights in “Star Wars” if it weren’t for the sport of fencing. When I think fencing I think snobbish rich people that was until I learned about hottie Daryl Homer. Originally from  St. Thomas, Virgin Islands Homer moved to the Bronx when he was a kid. He read about fencing and begged his mother to let him try it. The rest is history. Now Homer is the number 1 fencer in American and 12 in the World.

Things to love about Homer:

1. Homer is majoring in marketing at St. John’s University. Got to love a guy who can be an Olympic athlete and make time to go to the Olympics.

2. He loves to cook. I would let him cook for me any day.

3. Homer loves to shop. Something we definitely have in common. He also has good taste his favorite stores are Diesel, J. Crew and Ben Sherman.

4. His favorite music is Meek Mill, Kanye West, Big Sean, and Wale. It helps him get pumped before a match.

5. He is a mamma’s boy. Got to love a man who loves his mother.

Hot Olympian of the Day: Troy Dumais

29 Jun

The only thing hotter than a swimmer is a diver. As someone who feared the high drive, it is amazing to see these guys take the plunge with no fear. Troy Dumais definitely has no fear he is going to be the first diver to compete in four Olympic games. Although he doesn’t have metal yet this year could be his lucky one. He does have 28 national titles which is pretty amazing.

Reasons to love Dumais:

1. The thing he is most attracted to on a girl is a nice smile. Awww.

2. When he is not training(which is always he does 100-200 dives a day) he likes to grab a drink with friends. He also enjoys playing golf.

3. He majored in Kinesiology,Biomechanics, and Sports Management meaning he is a smarty. He is considering being a physical therapist when he retires from diving.

4. He’s got a very nice package. Which apparently a lot of you out there are googling “troy dumais bulge.” There is no stuffing in that tiny speedo.

5. He has a Lake house. Water front property is always a bonus.

The ABCs of Weird Olympic Athlete Names

1 May

We are fewer than 3 months away from the London 2012 Summer Olympics! I always enjoy strange athlete names, and the Olympics full of them. Sometimes, you have to wonder if these parents named their kids because they liked the name or with the intention of their child becoming an athlete.

Stokes Aitken – Skeleton – Stoked to meet you, Stokes

Peregrine Badger– Fencing – Straight out of the Hogwarts yearbook

Colin Cares – Cycling – Does he?

Buck Davidson – Equestrian – A Buck riding a horse

Jane Eyre – Fencing – Straight out of Jane Austen

Mardy Fish – Tennis – Love this cat, er, Fish

Elexis Gillette – Track and Field – Like the razor, he is so smooth

Destinee Hooker – Volleyball – Few names sound right with Hooker, but Destinee?

Race Imboden – Fencing – I’m beginning to think it’s a requirement for fencers to have weird names

Carmelita Jeter – Track and Field – Derek Jeter’s long-lost prima

Seth Kelsey – Fencing – Had to put this one in there since his last name is my first name

Kevin Love – Basketball – We have so much love for Mr. Love

Casey Jo Magee – Gymnastics – Sounds like a fake name, but it is still awesome
