Lance Armstrong Losing Everything

23 Aug

If you have been following Lance Armstrong originally appealed the USADA(Unites States Anti-Doping Agency which is a non-profit organization that receives partial funding from the federal government) right to investigate doping allegations but the case was thrown out. Armstrong was expected to appeal the decision. Instead Armstrong has decided not to fight anymore. This means he will lose all 7 of his Tour de France wins. He was also be hit with a life-time ban from cycling, which he retired from a year ago. And I guess we can no longer consider him the greatest cyclist of all time.

When asked for comment Armstrong said,”I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999. The toll this has taken on my family and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense.” Regardless of what you think of Armstrong doping you have to be sad for his foundation Livestrong which helps survivors of cancer. I’m sure it will be harder for them to raise money after this.

Armstrong has been accused by several former teammates of taking oral testosterone(yeah that’s everybody’s favorite recently). To cover-up for using the banned substance it is said that Armstrong received blood transfusions(aka. blood doping). He was also accused of supplying other teammates with drugs. This is despite passing nearly 500 doping test. He also survived a Federal investigation earlier this year for doping.

This once raises the issue of doping in sports. Even the teammates accusing Armstrong of doping were all suspended at one point for doping. If you look at the wikipedia page for doping cases in cycling it is incredibly long. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_doping_cases_in_cycling) All the major cyclist have been accused of doping at one point in their careers.

I think it is time that we have the debate about how much of an edge do steroids give athletes. If we gave everyone the same steroids would they all perform the same? How much of them winning is the extra edge and how much is natural? I can tell you that even if an average dude took the same steroids that Armstrong is accused of taking they still wouldn’t be able to win the Tour de France.

So Sad: Xiang Limping to Finish Race

7 Aug

This is one of the saddest things I seen since the Olympics started. Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang falls on the first hurdle in the 110-meter hurdles. The same thing happened to him in Beijing in 2008. He has struggled with an torn Achilles. After missing the hurdle he limped his way through the rest of the race. It was one of the hardest things to watch. Xiang is a the former world-record holder in the event and won the gold medal in the 2004 Athens games. This is most likely his last Olympics.

I Can’t Watch John Orozco Cry

31 Jul

The US Men’s Gymnastics team fell short and failed to medal in the team finals. The US finished fourth behind China, Japan and Great Britain. It was a shocking result for what some considered the Dream Team of gymnastics who had qualified in first place for the events. It just took three falls for them to disappear from the medal podium. First it was Sam Mikulak who was really close to a perfect floor routine but he fell and his score was dropped to 14.6. Then Danella Leyva fell on the pommel horse and had to restart which hurt his score. And the nail in the coffin was added by John Orozco who fell on the pommel horse and was given a 12.73 by the judges. Damn pommel horse.

Poor Orozco felt it was his fault but losing was really a team effort in this case. It was going to be hard for them to come back from such low scores to start on the floor. Watching Orozco, who came from the most unlikely gymnastics background, cry was unbearable. I literally could watch it without tearing up. It was like watching a kid who just learned Santa wasn’t real, way too painful.

Luckily there are still individual competitions coming up.

Don’t Worry Lochte We Still Love You

30 Jul

It’s been downhill for Ryan Lochte ever since his first gold medal win. First it was choking as the anchor of 400-meter freestyle relay. Lochte apparently got a little to excited a wore himself out by getting an early lead only to loose it in the end to Frenchman Yannick Agnel. Giving the Americans the silver medal behind France. Michael Phelps on the other hand proved why he was amazing by gaining a lead during his leg of the relay.

If that loss weren’t enough now Lochte has failed to medal 200-meter freestyle finishing fourth on Monday. He was beaten again by Frenchman Agnel who took home the gold. There is nothing worse than being beaten by the French, I’m mean isn’t it enough that they think they are better than us and now they are proving it. Despite this loss I still believe Lochte will win gold in the 200-meter individual medley and 200-meter backstroke. True Lochte fans never give up hope.

Grieving the Loss of Linsanity

20 Jul

While some New York Knicks fans could have cared less about Jeremy Lin there were others that have suffered. They have a void in their lives that can only be filled by yet another parody song of “Somebody I Used to Know.” Although I think this is a funny video it is no where near the level of “Kobe That I Used to Know.” Watch and enjoy!

That’s How I Celebrate

2 Jul

What better way to celebrate victory in a run than to shove an innocent mascot? That’s at least what French runner, Mahiedine Mekhissi Benabbad, thought after winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the European Championships. And sadly the poor person inside the costume is a 14-year old girl. I will totally give anyone props who can figure out what company this mascot represents? Is it a camera?

LeBron No Longer an NBA Loser

22 Jun

Thursday night the Miami Heat embarrassingly beat the Oklahoma City Thunder, 121-106. The Heat won the NBA Championship Title that they should have won a year ago against the Dallas Mavericks. It was a happy day for LeBron James who finally got a Championship ring and Finals MVP title. It was a sad day for comedians and James haters who will have to retire the jokes about him choking in the 4th quarter. What will we make fun of now? His sweat band?

Overall the Finals did not provide the excitement we had all been craving. After Game 1 the Thunder morphed into a different team it was hard to believe they had cruised over the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Lakers. The death match between James and almost MVP Kevin Durant really didn’t amount to anything interesting. James provided that he was the real MVP by carrying his team to victory. Not only that but James did something very different from last year, he shared the ball. He proved the saying is true teams win Championships not individual players. James scored 26 points for the Heat but that was just two points more than Chris Bosh. More interesting old man Mike Miller scored 23 from the bench.

And with that the Thunder went to the locker room crying, a place the Heat remember from last year. There is no doubt that the Thunder will be back next year. Durant and Russell Westbrook will definitely be staying with the Thunder. The question is whether James ‘Please Save Now’ Harden and Serge Ibaka will stay if they become free agents next year.

Even though the Heat won last night commentators are already speculating how many more they will win.

The LeBron James Song

13 Jun

Tuesday night on Jimmy Kimmel, Mike Tyson treated the audience to a special song dedicated to LeBron James. Let’s just hope that when Tyson moves to Broadway he doesn’t try to sing.

Junior Seau Dead

2 May

This is sad news the former All-Pro Linebacker, Junior Seau, was found dead Wednesday in Oceanside, CA. He died of an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. The police are investigating to see if it was a suicide. Throughout his career he has played for the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins, and New England Patriots. No one in Seau’s family seems to believe he was capable of committing suicide.

It is weird because back in 2010 Seau was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence. After he was released from jail he drove his car off a cliff. At the time Seau claimed he fell asleep at the wheel and it was not a suicide attempt. It is still unclear if his death was a suicide, maybe the investigation shed some light on what was really going on?
