Are the Dodgers Making a Big Expensive Mistake?

25 Aug

One of the biggest trades in MLB history happened Friday between the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Red Sox are sending first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, pitcher Josh Beckett, infielder Nick Punto and outfield Carl Crawford in exchange for first baseman James Loney, pitcher Rubby De La Rosa, middle infielder Ivan De Jesus and left fielder Jerry Sands. The Sox also added on $12 million dollars to sweeten the deal.

So who is winning in this massive trade? The Sox are definitely winning. By trading all these players they freed up a quarter of a billion dollars in payroll. It also got rid of a lot of upset players who were not so happy with new manager Bobby Valentine. So instead of fight through it they decided just to trade them. The Sox couldn’t get in worse they are already in last place in AL East so why not make a change?

The Dodgers fate is still unclear. Right now the Dodgers(under new ownership including Magic Johnson) are three games away from first place behind the San Francisco Giants in the NL West. And there is nothing more than a winning team to make new owners happy. A winning team is exactly what the new Dodger owners need to make sure they make their money back in television deals. No one is going to pay big bucks to broadcast a team that sucks. So the Dodgers are hoping the veterans can help them not only play better but establish a new brand.

Oh Cleveland . . .

10 Jul

So the mega confusing trade deal that would land Dwight Howard with the Brooklyn Nets is already unraveling. If you want to know the particular of it reference my earlier post, “The Most Confusing Trade Ever.” The deal was a four way trade between: Orlando Magic, Brooklyn Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Los Angeles Clippers. Now Cleveland is having second thoughts and has axed the idea. Maybe they realized that they were helping to create another juggernaut team that destroy them. Or maybe they realized they didn’t really need anything out of the deal.

Cleveland main role was to help free up salary for the Brooklyn Nets by taking Kris Humphries. So now the Nets are scrambling to see who else can he else can help them out. Meanwhile the Magic is back to looking at the Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets as homes for Howard. The problem is that Andrew Bynum, the only valuable player to Orlando, won’t accept an extension with them. Meaning they could get him for a year then be stuck rebuilding again. Not to mention the Lakers don’t have the salary space for Howard.

I’m not being traded but man is this situation frustrating. The Magic should have dumped Howard before when he was asking to be traded.

Status Quo Team

8 Jul

So last Olympics Team USA Basketball was the ‘Redeem Team,’ taking back the our title in basketball. So I guess this year they should be called the ‘Status Quo Team.’ All they have to do is go there and win like last time. That should be easy right? They have the best talent of the NBA(that’s not currently injured): LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul. Looking at the line-up it is a little troubling that there is only one center, Knicks’ Tyson Chandler. Chandler is great if he doesn’t run into foul trouble.

Team USA just added Thunder’s James Harden and his beard to the mix. Which is definitely a smart move in terms of defense. They also added another great defender 76er’s Andre Iguodala. They will be joining the rest of the team: Carmelo Anthony, Blake Griffin, Kevin Love, Deron Williams, and Russell Westbrook.

It is a killer team if they can figure out how to play together. But I would still be watching out for Spain and France. Especially since Tony Parker is all good to play now for France.

Who do you think?

Cries from the Crowd

It’s been a rough summer for the Men’s Basketball Team. Derrick Rose and Dwight Howard got hurt at the end of the NBA season, and most recently Chris Paul has gone down with injury, although thoughts are that it isn’t too serious. Add that to the smaller losses like Chris Bosh and LaMarcus Aldridge and it started to look like a problem.

Even with all of those injuries though, the USA team should be favorites in this years Olympics. That journey will start soon, but first the team needs to be completed. There’s been 9 locks on the team announced, and Blake Griffin was added earlier today. The locks are Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, Tyson Chandler, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Kevin Love, Chris Paul, Russel Westbrook and Deron Williams.

So with those 10 locked in, there is two final spots to round out the 12 man Team USA roster. The…

Another Bull Down

5 May

I am really going to have to update my NBA Playoff Bracket. I had the Bulls going all the way. Now they have lost center Joakim Noah who rolled his left ankle in the third quarter of the game Friday night. The Chicago Bulls were already hurting from their loss of Derrick Rose and now they are even further in the whole. Noah is not going to be playing in Game 4. Once Noah left the game the 76ers rolled over the Bulls erasing their lead and eventually winning, 79-74. Right now the 76ers are winning the series, 2-1. The Bulls are going to need a miracle to come back from this.

Brees = Loyality

17 Apr

Drew Brees spent his Monday at the NFL Offices, which shockingly is not in a secret underground bunker as I had thought, but actually in New York. Brees was discussing, among other things, the bounty program. He was joined by former New Orleans linebacker Scott Fujita. As you may know the NFL and head Roger Goodell have yet to hand out any punishments to players involved in the scandal. So far the Saints have lost: $500,000, 2 second-round draft picks, their coach Sean Payton, their assistant coach/fill in coach Joe Vitt for seven games, and their reputation.

But if Brees conversation with Goodell is anything like what he says the media it was probably very unproductive. Brees loves Payton and was not happy to see him go for a season. And Brees also loves Vitt. Not only that but Brees still doesn’t have a long-term contract with the Saints, which he wanted from the beginning. So good luck getting a guy who is trying to secure his job to give you dirt on them. Also while attending this meeting Brees also missed opening day of the Saints offseason program. I think the Saints should give him that contract soon so he can get back to work.
