US Open Day 2: Yawn

29 Aug

So there were no exciting upsets on Day 2 of the US Open. There was also not much excitement at all. Players defeated opponents quickly and efficiently. Defending champion Novak Djokovic killed his opponent Italian Paolo Lorenzi 6-1, 6-0, 6-1. The match lasted all of 73 minutes and was pretty much an ass whooping.

Then Serena Williams defeated fellow American Coco Vandeweghe 6-1, 6-1. At this point it kind of seems like Serena could win in her sleep. Her sister Venus Williams on the other hand has been struggling. Venus has been trying to push past her autoimmune disease but fell short in the past. Venus did manage to defeat fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-3, 6-1.

So no close matches yet. Maybe there will be some excitement on Day 3 with Maria Sharapova and Andy Murray.

US Open Favorites Still In

28 Aug

Despite having some stuff issues which in the media automatically means pregnancy, Maria Sharapova, cruised through the opening round of the US Open. Sharapova who is ranked third defeated Melinda Czink of Hungary, 6-2, 6-2 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. It seems like Sharapova is rebounded well after being crushed by Serena Williams at the Olympic where she lost 6-0, 6-1. Sharapova claims part of the reason she struggled against Williams was her weird stomach pains.

The other tennis champs are cruising on as well. Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray defeated Alex Bogomolov Jr., of Russsia, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 on Monday. Roger Federer defeated Donald Young, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

US Open favorite Serena Williams will play Tuesday against Coco Vandeweghe. Another US Open favorite Novak Djokovic, who has taken out Federer twice in the open, will play against Paolo Lorenzi Tuesday as well. Venus Williams will also take the court on Tuesday against fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Venus has been struggling so we will definitely have to see how far she makes it.

Preseason Death Match: Luck VS RGIII

25 Aug

If you missed all the insane hype the Washington Redskins took on the Indianapolis Colts today. It was the battle of the rookies quarterback between Colts’ Andrew Luck and Redskins’ Robert Griffin III(RGIII). There were t-shirts being sold ”QB Showdown.” It was basically the most exciting thing to happen in the preseason thus far. It ended with the Redskins winning, 30-17. So how did the boy wonder quarterbacks do? Both quarterbacks played into the third quarter. Luck completed 14 of 23 passes for 151 yards. He also threw a touchdown that was carried by rookie T.Y Hilton. Meanwhile Griffin completed 11 of 17 passes for 74 yards and had a touchdown. In terms of being sacked(tackled by a large man) Luck was sacked twice and Griffin managed to evade sacking entirely.

Both rookies performed well but since the Redskins won I guess that means Griffin wins this battle. Despite the fact that Luck had a better QB rating and more yards.  While everyone else was focusing on Luck and Griffin, another rookie was stealing the spotlight. Redskins’ running back Alfred Morris ran for 107 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown.

So it was a good game as good as you can expect from the preseason.

Serena is Smokin

24 Aug

Seriously Serena Williams looked amazing at her appearance the other night on Letterman. She deserves to look pretty before the US Open starts on Sunday and she has to spend her days sweaty. If you were curious her shoes are Christian Louboutins that cost $4,000. It pays to be good.

Well Canada, That’s A Familiar Shitty Feeling Huh?

7 Aug

Great post. And it was a great game. I don’t follow soccer but apparently that call is very rare.

Alex Morgan, you sexy little minx! An American hero if I have ever seen one.

“It takes just one chance, one moment of brilliance for someone to do something special”. That’s what Abby Wambach had to say about Alex Morgan’s incredible header in the last seconds of extra time. Canada blew three leads in this amazing semifinal game, all thanks to a hattrick by Miss Piggy herself, Christine Sinclair

Image.

It was an incredible offensive game, with two goals by Megan Rapinoe, a penalty kick goal by Abby Wambach, and then the eventual game winning header by Alex Morgan. There was some controversy on a call against Canada’s goalkeeper Erin Mcleod for breaking the 6 second rule, meaning you can’t handle the ball for longer then six seconds. She was clearly holding the ball for longer than six seconds, not just that instance, but the entire game. Well, Abby Wambach…

GOOD BLACK NEWS

Serena Williams demolished Russia’s Maria Sharapova 6-0 6-1 to grab Olympic tennis singles gold on Saturday, becoming the first player in the sport to win all four grand slams and an Olympic title in both singles and doubles.  Having completed the career “golden slam”, the unstoppable American, who dropped just 17 games in her six Olympics singles matches, is now making plans away from tennis.  “I’ve won everything. Now I can go to Disneyworld,” said the 30-year old, laughing.

Grieving the Loss of Linsanity

20 Jul

While some New York Knicks fans could have cared less about Jeremy Lin there were others that have suffered. They have a void in their lives that can only be filled by yet another parody song of “Somebody I Used to Know.” Although I think this is a funny video it is no where near the level of “Kobe That I Used to Know.” Watch and enjoy!

MSG owner of The New York Knick’s stock dives after departure of Jeremy lin.

I told you so, no really I did. Check my earlier blog about this.

Broad Hut

MSG is the company that owns the New York Knicks. It also owns the Madison Square Garden, the historic Beacon Theatre in New York and the gorgeous Chicago Theatre in that city’s downtown loop, along with the New York Rangers and several television stations. It’s a publicly traded company that would seem, considering its considerable holdings, to be impervious to the play of a pretty good point guard. Apparently that’s not the case, as we look at the effect that former Knick guard Jeremy Linhas had on MSG stock.

Losing Lin: NY’s Big Mistake

16 Jul

Just two days ago it seemed like a sure thing that Jeremy Lin would be returning to the New York Knicks. That was until the Houston Rockets up the anti and increased their offer to Lin. Reports stated that the original offer was for $28 million with $19.5 million guaranteed  for four-years. The new offer is a three-year deal for $25 million with $15 million in the 3rd year. Now reports are saying that the Knicks are not planning to match the offer.

On Saturday the Knicks acquired point guard Raymond Felton from the Portland Trail Blazers. Leaving everyone wondering where does that leave Lin? It’s not like the Knicks need three point guards, Jason Kidd being another point guard addition. If the Knicks did decide to keep Lin they are looking at a luxury tax for the 2013-14 season. The luxury tax is a tax given to teams when they exceed the salary cap. To avoid paying the luxury tax the Knicks probably won’t resign Lin. But in reality is the bloated spending elsewhere that is putting the Knicks in jeopardy of the tax. Blaming Lin for the tax is like adding a quarter to a sinking ship and blaming it for putting it under water.

When Knick Carmelo Anthony heard about the Rockets’ offer to Lin he immediately said it was way too much. Apparently Anthony forgot how much money Lin brings in off the court in jersey sales, ticket sales, etc. Since Lin became a star the Knicks’ market capitalization (the value of the company) is up nearly $600 million. I think that proves that Lin is worth the extra money. And how stupid do you have to be to give away that much money?

Serena Wins Wimbledon

7 Jul

Serena Williams just won her 5th Wimbledon title on Saturday. She took out first-time finalist Agnieszka Radwanska 6-1, 5-7. 6-2. That poor Polish girl didn’t stand a chance against Williams’ aces. She had 102 aces in the tournament and 4 in one game. That’s amazing considered she just recovered from foot surgery. This is Williams’ 14th major title.

The fun is not over for Williams who will be competing with Venus later today in the doubles final. We will be watching.
