US Open Favorites Still In

28 Aug

Despite having some stuff issues which in the media automatically means pregnancy, Maria Sharapova, cruised through the opening round of the US Open. Sharapova who is ranked third defeated Melinda Czink of Hungary, 6-2, 6-2 at Arthur Ashe Stadium. It seems like Sharapova is rebounded well after being crushed by Serena Williams at the Olympic where she lost 6-0, 6-1. Sharapova claims part of the reason she struggled against Williams was her weird stomach pains.

The other tennis champs are cruising on as well. Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray defeated Alex Bogomolov Jr., of Russsia, 6-2, 6-4, 6-1 on Monday. Roger Federer defeated Donald Young, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.

US Open favorite Serena Williams will play Tuesday against Coco Vandeweghe. Another US Open favorite Novak Djokovic, who has taken out Federer twice in the open, will play against Paolo Lorenzi Tuesday as well. Venus Williams will also take the court on Tuesday against fellow American Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Venus has been struggling so we will definitely have to see how far she makes it.

Congrats Serena!!!!!

Serena Williams demolished Russia’s Maria Sharapova 6-0 6-1 to grab Olympic tennis singles gold on Saturday, becoming the first player in the sport to win all four grand slams and an Olympic title in both singles and doubles.  Having completed the career “golden slam”, the unstoppable American, who dropped just 17 games in her six Olympics singles matches, is now making plans away from tennis.  “I’ve won everything. Now I can go to Disneyworld,” said the 30-year old, laughing.

ESPYs Fashion Rundown

12 Jul

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Forget the Hollywood celebs at the 2012 ESPYs the real stars are the athletes. The ESPY are the awards presented by the ESPN for excellence in sports and is voted by you(or the actual people who voted). The big winner of the night was LeBron James who won 3 awards. He didn’t have time accept the awards because he is training in Las Vegas for the Olympics. But don’t worry lots of other celeb athletes strutted their stuff on the red carpet.

Sharapova Gone : (

2 Jul

Wimbledon is turning out a lot of upsets this year. First we save favorite and super hottie Rafael Nadal upset last week by Lukas Rosol. Now Maria Sharapova has fallen to 15th Ranked German, Sabine Lisicki. Sharapova lost 6-4, 6-3. It is sad to see her go because she was trying to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2002 to win the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year.

Sharapova just won the French Open which completed her career Grand Slam. Serena Williams is still in it and has yet to play her 4th round. She will take on defending champion Petra Kvitova next.

Wimbeldon: Sexist Loser & Winners

28 Jun

Wimbeldon is still going on. So here is quick break down of what happens. We will start with the loser.

Gilles Simon– The French tennis players seems to think women don’t deserve equal prize money with men at Wimbeldon. Equal prize money has not been in place that long. Simon lost his second round match so I guess he’s jealous. He thinks that because men’s tennis is best of 5 matches(women’s is best of 3) that they should win more money.

He followed it up by saying, “I have the feeling that men’s tennis is actually more interesting than women’s tennis,” he said. “When that Shakira is singing, she is earning more money than most of the men because everyone wants to see her. That’s it.” I’m not sure that singing is a women’s domain . . .cough cough Frank Sinatra.

Maria Sharapova commented back, “”I’m sure there are a few more people that watch my matches than his, so…” And there you have it. Serena Williams added in, “”She’s[Sharapova] way hotter than he is.”Simon tried to come back by saying all male tennis players feel the same way he does. Sure they do.

I’m all for Sharapova killing Simon’s ass on the court.

Quieter Tennis IS Possible

26 Jun

Tennis fans, rejoice! Excessive grunting may be a thing of the past. The WTA has plans to introduce a “grunt-o-meter” to measure the decibel levels of those sweet, soothing sounds that have been around since the days of Monica Seles. The plan would also include a rule for acceptable levels of noise as well as education at tennis academies and development programs. However, the plan would not affect current players and would be grandfathered in.

I don’t understand why there can’t be a rule put into effect for the current players. The top shreikers, Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka, have said the noises they make are involuntary. I don’t buy this at all. I can see making some noise on a tough shot or from fatigue, but these ladies go over-the-top. I’m sure if they started fining these offenders they would pipe-down in no time.

For now, I’ll continue to watch Sharapova’s matches with the mute button on.

Venus Out, Sharapova Moving On

25 Jun

The once all-powerful Venus Williams has fallen in the first round of of Wimbeldon on Monday. Williams(now 32 years old) has been struggling with autoimmune disease the has been considerably slowing her down. She was defeated by 79th-ranked Elena Vesnina of Russia with 6-1, 6-3.  It’s been 6 1/2 years since Williams has lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament. Williams is planning to be at the Olympics but it’s not looking promising.

Meanwhile Maria Sharapova just keeps on cruising through matches. She beat Aussie Anastasia Rodionova 6-2, 6-3. Sharapova is trying to win both the French Open and Wimbeldon in the same year. The last woman to do that was Serena Williams 10-years ago. It is looking likely it will happen.

Mayweather Rollin in Dough

19 Jun

According to Forbes.com Floyd “Money” Mayweather is the highest-paid athlete with earnings of $85 million. Which makes it seem even more suspicious that he won’t fight Manny Pacquiao because he doesn’t want to split the earnings 50/50. Does Mayweather really need more money? He’s got $85 mil and that wasn’t even enough to bail him out of jail early. The only place Mayweather is beating Pacquiao right now is in earnings. Pacquaio came in second on Forbes list making $62 million. Unlike Pacquaio who is promoted through Top Rank, Mayweather promotes himself so he takes home 50% higher earnings than Pacquaio.

The two boxers managed to knock Tiger Woods off the top earning spot for the first time since 2001. Woods made $59.4 million and that’s after destroying his reputation. I think I would rather be a golfer than a boxer, Woods makes almost all his money through endorsements and doesn’t have to take punches to the face.

LeBron James is fourth on the list with $53 million. So maybe you don’t have to feel as bad for him not having that championship ring. To comfort himself he can always fill his bath tub with money and roll around in it.

Sadly there are only two women in the top 100; Maria Sharapova with $27.9 million and tennis player Li Na with $18.4 million.

Sharapova Gets Her Grand Slam

9 Jun

Maria Sharapova won the French Open Saturday. This makes her only the 10th woman in history to win all four major tournaments: Wimbledon in 2004, the U.S. Open in 2006 and the Australian Open in 2008. Sharapova defeated Sara Errani 6-3, 6-2 in the final at Roland Garros. Errani was really out matched by Sharapova but fought her way through and made the match interesting.

What great about this win for Sharapova is that it was purely about her love for tennis. She already has a hot husband, money, fame, and established record. She kept playing for this because she really love tennis. I think after covering so much basketball it is great to see someone purely motivated by love of the game and not money.

Don’t Eff This One Up, Maria

7 Jun

Maria Sharapova has all but clinched the French Open title. Everybody’s favorite Russian beat fourth-seeded Petra Kvitova in straight sets to reach the final.

Sharapova will face-off against Italian Sara Errani. This will be the first Grand Slam final for Errani, and if Sharapova doesn’t eff-up wins then she will become the 10th woman ever to win all four Grand Slams to complete a career Grand Slam.

With the semi-final win, Sharapova has regained the number one ranking. And we all know how relevant that is, considering Danish star and undergarment designer Caroline Wozniacki held the top spot for most of last year and has yet to win a Grand Slam.
