Lance Armstrong Losing Everything

23 Aug

If you have been following Lance Armstrong originally appealed the USADA(Unites States Anti-Doping Agency which is a non-profit organization that receives partial funding from the federal government) right to investigate doping allegations but the case was thrown out. Armstrong was expected to appeal the decision. Instead Armstrong has decided not to fight anymore. This means he will lose all 7 of his Tour de France wins. He was also be hit with a life-time ban from cycling, which he retired from a year ago. And I guess we can no longer consider him the greatest cyclist of all time.

When asked for comment Armstrong said,”I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999. The toll this has taken on my family and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today – finished with this nonsense.” Regardless of what you think of Armstrong doping you have to be sad for his foundation Livestrong which helps survivors of cancer. I’m sure it will be harder for them to raise money after this.

Armstrong has been accused by several former teammates of taking oral testosterone(yeah that’s everybody’s favorite recently). To cover-up for using the banned substance it is said that Armstrong received blood transfusions(aka. blood doping). He was also accused of supplying other teammates with drugs. This is despite passing nearly 500 doping test. He also survived a Federal investigation earlier this year for doping.

This once raises the issue of doping in sports. Even the teammates accusing Armstrong of doping were all suspended at one point for doping. If you look at the wikipedia page for doping cases in cycling it is incredibly long. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_doping_cases_in_cycling) All the major cyclist have been accused of doping at one point in their careers.

I think it is time that we have the debate about how much of an edge do steroids give athletes. If we gave everyone the same steroids would they all perform the same? How much of them winning is the extra edge and how much is natural? I can tell you that even if an average dude took the same steroids that Armstrong is accused of taking they still wouldn’t be able to win the Tour de France.

Oh Silly Rabbit, Don’t You Know Better Than to Create a Fake Website

19 Aug

San Francisco Giants’ Melky Cabrera for tried to fool the MLB into thinking he “accidently” took performance enhancing drugs. Cabrera’s people created a fake website that sells a suspicious supplement with side effects of increasing testosterone. It was their execuse for why Cabrera suddenly had a spike in testosterone. Cabrera paid a consultant, Juan Nunez, to create the site for $10,000. Nunez is now taking the fall for the failed plan.

I can’t say I blame them for trying. I mean after all we are talking about the MLB who still thinks that most of their players are not doping so they are definitely not the brightest crayons in the box. So where did this genius sad plan go wrong? The site only magically appeared during the appeals process. Don’t they know if you are going to launch a cover-up it needs to be way before Cabrera has already been suspended. The MLB maybe be dumb but they are not that dumb.

Unsurprisingly banned at London 2012

12 Jul

I thought only children liked to make annoying noises over and over. Guess soccer fans like that too.

Marg's Meanderings

During the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Africa I worked the national sports desk for the Toronto Sun’s online department which meant I was in very frequent contact with the writers who were covering the event.

And every single one complained about a certain aspect of the event – Vuvuzelas.

Oh yes, those annoying instruments of torture that filled the soccer stadiums with an incessant buzz that the broadcast teams struggled to mute during games. No more will we hear the droning, frustratingly akin to a swarm of wasps, as we’re focused on top-flight athletes wowing us with their skill.

Why will the Vuvuzela be so conspicuously absent in London? Because the governing body has banned them.

Oh thank goodness!

Amongst other banned objects are frisbees, balls, whistles, drums and even big hats.

What If I Want Shackles on My Shoes?

18 Jun

I am sad happy to say that the latest trend from Adidas, sneakers with shackles, has been cancelled before they could even be released. Apparently the shoes reminds people of slavery. Personally they remind me of 1940’s prison yard workers but I can see the slavery thing too. The shoes originally were supposed by a reboot of high tops designed by Jeremy Scott. If you don’t know Scott by name then surely you’ll remember him as the guy who designed Brittney Spears elastic outfit in her Toxic video. The shoe didn’t get any buzz until the company started promoting them on Facebook. At which point the JS Roundhouse Mid became known as the slavery shoe.

The promotion line for the shoe was, “a sneaker game so hot you lock your kicks to your ankles.” So does that mean the shackles double as an anti-theft system?

Giants Struggle, Dodgers Dominate

8 May

Monday night the San Francisco Giants had their asses handed to them by the Los Angeles Dodgers, 9-1. The game was so painful that my friend who is a die-hard Giants fan asked me to turn off the television. It was so bad that you would have thought the Giants had never played baseball before. Literally they couldn’t even keep their gloves on.

The night had started out badly when the Giants were told that reliever, Guillermo Mota, had tested positive for drugs and would be banned for 100 games. This is not the first time that Mota has been banned for drug use, he missed 50 games with the Mets back in 2006. Mota’s drug of choice is clenbuterol. Adam Katz, Mota’s agent, thinks it is a little extreme that he was banned for 100 games for using a less extreme steroid children’s cough medicine. If you are wondering why a grown man would be taking a children’s cough medicine it is because the drug also causes increased metabolism and anaerobic capacity. It is the same drug that caused Spanish cyclist, Alberto Contador, be stripped of his win in the Tour de France in 2010.

The Giants had already lost star hitter, Pablo Sandoval, who is out for 4-6 weeks for hand surgery. It is so bad that they had to bring in outfielder, Aubrey Huff, who hasn’t been playing due to a panic attack disorder.

Something needs to change soon for the Giants . . . maybe a new coach.

My New Sports Fan Icon

2 May

I just came across this interview that Conan O’Brien did with actress Gabrielle Union. I loved Union before this but now I just want to be her. Not only is she gorgeous (and totally doesn’t look her age, which is 39) and talented but she is an avid sports fan. It doesn’t hurt that her boyfriend is Miami Heat’s Dwyane Wade.  In her interview with O’Brien she is talking about how she no longer is allowed to sit court side at Heat games. Apparently Union is too vocal not just to the other team but to her own man. I love that she is hot enough that she can get away with yelling air ball at Wade during a game. It was distracting Wade so Union now sits further back.

I think that all girls can learn from this interview how sexy it is when a girl talks about sports. Sports talking is the new little black dress.

Who Will Inherit the Saints?

13 Apr

The New Orleans Saints are in the middle of the bountygate investigation by the NFL. Coach Sean Payton has been banned for a year with no hope of shorter sentence since his appeal was denied. For those of you unaware of bountygate it was program set-up with the Saints where players received money for intentionally inflicting harm on players of the opposing team. And yes I realize that sounds a lot like the sport of football but apparently there is a difference.

Now the Saints have decided that assistant coach Joe Vitt will take over in Payton’s absence. But even Vitt was not immune from bountygate and is banned from 6 games of the season. They haven’t decided who will replace Vitt. It is kind of like looking at will for the Saints, they just keep going down the list trying to find someone who started working there after the scandal. I suspect Payton will still have his hand in the coaching cookie jar ban or no ban. That’s why the Saints are opting to keep the coach in house.

Bountygate Continues

11 Apr

Lesson to be learned in life, if you are going to run an illegal bounty program than you should probably keep anyone who knows happy. New Orleans filmmaker and author Alan Donnes revealed that the source of leak on bounty gate came from former defensive quality control coach Mike Cerullo. Apparently Cerullo was having some trouble finding NFL work and realized that maybe he was getting less than stellar recommendations from Sean Payton and Gregg Williams. Cerullo, now at the UConn football, declined to comment. I don’t blame Cerullo for not wanting credit, Williams said some pretty intense stuff in that released speech.

Of course Cerullo is getting the last laugh with Williams being banned forever indefinitely. And Saint’s coach Payton getting banned for a year. The ban was help up not ironically by the same guy who issued it commissioner Roger Goodell. I am proud of Goodell for sticking with his original decision. Although I am still not sure if they proved any of the hits in the bounty program were actually illegal hits? Is it the motivation to hit someone that matters in football because I am pretty sure it is always money- bounty money or contract money? Regardless now the debate begins of who will be coaching the Saints. I hear Bobby Petrino is available and you can get him on the cheap.
